The Overland Track is limited to 34 hikers starting each day, so reservations need to be made early. Of course, when you need to commit to a start date in advance, you have no idea what the weather will be like on the day you start. Some people report hiking in the rain for most of it. Fortunately for us, we only really had one rainy day to hike, and it was today, on Christmas Eve. Today’s hike was 16.8 km and took about 5-7 hours to reach the Pelion Hut, where we planned to spend Christmas.

It was great to finally arrive and make ourselves comfortable in this well-maintained hut, with spectacular views of Mount Oakleigh (1286m) across some button grass moorlands.

Late in the day, we were treated to the sight of some boxing kangaroos right in front of the hut, which isn’t something you get to see every day in Australia.
